SBA List - Advancing, Mobilizing and Representing Pro-Life Women

Dear Jack,

I hope you had a great weekend!

I know all the excitement right now surrounds the SBA List’s “Rick Bus,” which just wrapped up a great day down in Georgia, but I wanted to take a minute to give you a quick update on our legislative efforts to save lives at both the state and federal level.

Efforts to Protect Conscience

Thank you to the tens of thousands of SBA List activists who urged their Senators to vote for the Blunt Amendment to protect the conscience and religious liberty of all Americans. Unfortunately, the Blunt Amendment failed by a vote of 51 to 48.

It was basically a party line vote with the exception of Republican Olympia Snowe of Maine voting against the Blunt Amendnent, and Democratic Senators Sens. Ben Nelson (NE), Bob Casey (PA) and Joe Manchin (WV) voting for it.

Here’s Marjorie’s reaction:

There will be consequences in November for Senators in tight races who voted to kill this amendment with the absurd reasoning that they are acting in the best interests of women. Undermining the religious liberty and conscience rights of women can never serve them.”

Also, in today’s Roll Call, Marjorie and Chuck Donovan, president of the Lozier Institute which serves as the educational and research arm of the SBA List, have a great op-ed in print titled “Mandate for ‘Free’ Abortion Drugs Is Not Freedom.” Please take a minute to read it by clicking here.

Defunding Planned Parenthood

As you may know, the SBA List has been teaming up with statewide and local pro-life groups to defund Planned Parenthood in state legislatures across the country. Here’s a quick rundown of our most recent efforts:

  • Ohio: Just last week, the SBA List traveled to the “Buckeye State” to support legislation introduced by Rep. Kristina Roegner that prioritizes family planning funds away from abortion businesses. The Lozier Institute’s Chuck Donovan testified in support of the bill before the House’s Health & Aging Committee. We are especially grateful to all our Ohio activists who are lobbying their legislators to get the bill passed, and to Ohio Right to Life for all their leadership and hospitality.

  • Arizona: The SBA List was honored to team up with seven different pro-life groups for Defund Planned Parenthood rallies outside of two of their abortion businesses in Glendale and Tucson. The rallies were in support of HB 2800, which is based on the SBA List’s model legislation that was developed with our friends at the Alliance Defense Fund. I am happy to report that over 250 activists turned out to the rallies. You can see great TV coverage from the rallies here. The Lozier Institute’s Chuck Donovan testified in support of the bill before the House’s Health Committee. Special thanks goes out to Arizona Center for Policy and Arizona Right to Life for their continued support and leadership.

  • Oklahoma: We’ve been proud to work with pro-life Rep. Jason Murphey in support of HB 2324, which would prioritize funding away from abortion businesses. The bill has passed through committee and is expected on the floor in the next few weeks.
  • New Hampshire: The SBA List’s model legislation developed with our friends at the Alliance Defense Fund has passed the New Hampshire House, and we’re waiting to hear its committee assignment in the Senate. We are grateful to Rep. Warren Groen for leading the charge in the House and to Cornerstone for all their leadership.

Finally, at the federal level, the SBA List has been working with our allies here in Washington to rally support behind Rep. Cliff Stearns and his Congressional investigation of Planned Parenthood. Just today, Human Events published an excellent story on where we are in those efforts titled, “Calls for Planned Parenthood oversight hearings get louder.” You can read the story here.
