Dear Patriot,
The Tea Party and free political speech are under attack from the federal government. Obama is already using the justice department as a political weapon and now the IRS is trying to intimidate Tea Party organizations out of existence,attempting to silence Americans exercising their first amendment rights!
The IRS has sent dozens of letters to Tea Party organizations big and small that had sought to become 501(c)4 organizations. These letters are loaded with ridiculous demands that these groups report all activities they engage in – and respond in an absurdly short amount of time.
Most worrisome – the Obama IRS wants organizations that aren’t required to do so to disclose their donors – making them subject to all kinds of political retribution! Why else would the IRS ask for this, since who your donors are doesn’t determine if an organization is qualified for tax exemption?!
Large organizations like ours have skilled attorneys to respond to these threatening inquires, but many smaller groups don't have the resources to fight the IRS. This is clearly an attempt to silence political speech and freedom to peacefully assemble for a political cause!
This goes to the very essence of the Tea Party movement and I AM OUTRAGED! The Tea Party's greatest strength is that it is driven by local political action. Our organization has always been dedicated to empowering local groups and activists to be more effective, not trying to dictate the direction of those organizations. This attempt to silence those groups is a terrifying assault on our constitutional rights and must not be tolerated!
Recent Supreme Court rulings have made the laws surrounding political organizations very murky, and local groups need to take the threat that these letters represent seriously. We are currently discussing with our attorneys exactly how we can help provide representation to any Tea Party group who has received these threats from the IRS. The laws are so complex and incomprehensible that we can't even provide basic representation to other groups without running the logistics of it through our lawyer.
This is going to be a HUGE issue for us in the coming weeks, and we are still working with the great folks at Americans For Prosperity to cosponsor the Hands Off My Healthcare Rally.
