Home Invasion Protection: Shotgun Packin' Mama
Home Defense Shotguns
I’m a firm believer in home defense shotguns. I have good reason for this, and it started when I was a child. My father always said it was a parent’s duty to protect your home and family, and it stuck with me. He firmly believed that shotguns were key elements in home defense, and he always kept a couple on hand, just in case of a home invasion. Years later, when my kids were small and I was married to their father, it really struck home. We lived way out in the boonies. We were surrounded on two sides by dense woods, and there were more across the road. My ex had a job that required a rotating shift, so he was on the “graveyard” shift for seven nights straight every four weeks. I hated that week. It always seemed to last forever. One particular night made me fully realize just how important home defense shotguns can be.
Home Invasion Protection
Why do I think shotguns are the best firearms for home invasion protection? If you know much about guns, you already know the answer to that question. If you’re not knowledgeable about firearms, allow to explain. Shotguns scatter a number of individual shot when fired, so your aim doesn’t have to be as accurate as it would have to be with a rifle or pistol. At close range, shotguns deliver a lot of knock-down power, too. And for home invasion protection, chances are that you’re going to be shooting at close range. Okay, back to the story.
I had my trusty 12-gauge shotgun by my bed for protection and home defense. I had grown up with guns because my dad was a gun dealer, a hunter, and an avid collector of firearms. He had taught me to shoot when I was just a kid, and in fact, he had given me the Remington Wingmaster as a wedding present. In college, I had been on the skeet-shooting team, and later, I had won two Ducks Unlimited skeet-shooting competitions. In one of these contests, I shot 100 out of 100. You might say I was pretty handy with a shotgun.
Anyway, one night while the ex was working, I was awakened by the deep growls of my watchdog, a Great Dane named Ebony. She was a watchdog – not a guard dog. Her job was to alert me, and she did. It was about three a.m. I peeked out my upstairs window, and to my horror, I saw a car pulled over on the side of the road just past my house. As I watched, three men got out of the vehicle and began walking toward my home. Maybe their car broke down, I thought to myself. Still, I figured it was better to be safe. I threw on some clothes, grabbed my shotgun, and crept downstairs.
Home Invasion
The men were planning a home invasion – into my house! By the time I reached the front door, one of the guys was trying to gain entry by picking the lock. I could see the doorknob jiggling, and I could hear the muffled voices of the men. I worried about my three sleeping little girls upstairs, and I experienced a sudden rush of adrenaline. For a few seconds, I became Super Mom and was totally without fear. Rational thought escaped me as instinct overtook my body and apparently my brain. I took the safety off the gun, unlocked the door, and threw it open. As I did so, I swung the shotgun up to face level.
“You sure you want in here?!” I shouted to the intruders.
I’ll never forget the looks on the faces of the would-be intruders. All three were black, and I distinctly recall that the whites of their eyes became huge! They spun on their heels and high-tailed it back to their waiting car. When I fired a parting shot in the air, their retreat got even faster, which I didn’t think was possible. All three must have been related to Jesse Owens.
After the car left and the danger had passed, the adrenaline stopped flowing. That’s when I got scared. Super Mom turned into a mass of tear-riddled jelly. I called my brother-in-law, who lived just up the road. He came over and calmed me down and stayed until sunrise. I tried to go back to sleep, but I couldn’t.
I never saw the men again. Our house was pretty far from the road, so getting a tag number or even a good description of the car was impossible. I guess I made my point, however. These guys must have spread the word about the shotgun-packin’ mama who lived in the blue house because we never had another home invasion attempt, even when everyone around us experienced break-ins a year or so later.
Protect Your Home
As a homeowner, you should be prepared to protect your home. And by “home,” I mean whatever sort of dwelling you live in, be it a house, an apartment, a trailer, or a tent. More importantly, you need to be able to protect your family. In some areas of the United States, crimes like theft, burglary, and home invasion are soaring. In my opinion, it’s because many people are getting desperate due to high unemployment rates. I feel sorry for such people, but I’m not ready to offer up my family as sacrifices. Some of these thieves might not be dangerous, but you just never know what might be on their minds.
You need to come up with some of home defense in order to protect your home. If you decide on a shotgun, please learn to use it correctly. The more practice you get, the more confident you’ll become. When you’re totally at ease with the weapon and confident that you can aim and shoot accurately, you’ll no longer feel like a victim. Instead, you’ll feel empowered. I’m not saying that a gun is the right choice for everyone – it’s not. In fact, in the wrong hands, a firearm might actually make matters more dangerous.
If guns just aren’t your “thing,” there are other ways to protect your home. One of the most important precautions, according to experts, is to have adequate outdoor lighting. We have bright lights at each entry into our home, along with a couple of motion-sensor lights. Of course, you might also want to use an alarm system that alerts you when a window or door is opened. A watchdog is a good idea, too. Experts on home defense say that an indoor dog is best, and size doesn’t matter. Any alert dog can let you know when something is amiss outside. Remember, dogs hear much better than humans do. if you’re like me, and if you live in a high crime area, you might prefer to use an all-of-the-above approach to protect your home.

Wow - what a story! Okay, now I want a dog! Thank goodness you'r Dane woke you - lord knows what could have happened - good for you, Holle!
Wow, habee, what an experience. I can sympathize with you because we had a break-in and it does shake you up like anything. Thanks for sharing.
Oh habee, I can see this now! Great storytelling and great story...for some reason it makes me think of a line from a song (don't know which song but still...) "I'm going home to load my shotgun...." Ha ha!!!!!
Great job and you keep on protecting your loved ones!!!
You are an amazing woman!
Mama bear protecting her cubs.
Wonderful Habee
You're a tough lady, habee.
Habee, good for you. You broke down later, but that's expected. The adrenalin rush blocked all other emotions while dealing with the situation. That shotgun and their belief that you'd use it is what put their boats in overdrive.
Staring down the business end of a 12 gauge ain't no fun. However, neither is rape. You did what you did to protect your family. You just added one more reason for me to continue to be your fan. Good for you!
Remember the Dirty Harry movies? "Make my Day!? Well, "You sure you want in here?" is going to become my favorite saying now!
You go girl! I love that story. My step daughter grew up with her father teaching her about guns and she is very comfortable with them. He is trying to teach me as I have a little handgun but there seems to be a learning curve. When the weather warms up we'll go to the gun range and it is really nice there.
It truly amazes me the strength we get when we are placed in a situation that calls for protecting ourselves and our children. I bet those guys never bother you again. As scary as that was, it just goes to show you what you can do when you are backed into a corner.
good job habee hehe, you woman hmmm, at least you can protect yourself, Maita
Wow, what a story! That gun almost looks 3D.
Oh, Holle-I knew that adrenaline rush once as well, followed by the melty rubber legs! It IS after these sorts of events that the fear sets in...
Good for you, gal-
Hope it never happens to either of us again!
Laurel
Coming to a theater near you: "Dirty Habee." "So, punk, do ya really want in here? Well, do ya, punk?"
wow, how brave !
Wow, that's a pretty crazy story. I don't know if I would have the guts to open the door like that, but then again I guess you never know how you'd react until your actually in the situation.
BPop is a woman? I had no idea.
Habee you crack me up! My mom slept with the double barrel under her bed for as long as I can remember. Love the photo! I too will be saying "You sure you want in here?"
And like you, I know the feeling of the post adrenaline shakes. Wow, great story, thanks for sharing.
Wow...I know how horrified you must have been! I live in the boonies too, and once had some men come up, selling meat out of the back of their pickup..or so they said...I too, was alone, but when I opened the door, with my doberman, and my shotgun, they drove off too!! Loved the story...good hub! I pushed your green button!
habee! I love this.....sorry that you were scared when it happened, but this hub is brilliant! My hubby owns and loves guns. I have gone to the shooting range quite a few times with him. We live in a rural area North of LA.....it gets a bit "quiet" out here sometimes.......BUT the idea of what you just described comes to mind often when my hubby is working a lot and far away from our home.
I commend you for being one "Hot Packin Mama!" Best, G
Awesome Hub!
OMG what a picture that painted. You go girl...That is too scary though! I am glad you had that shotgun. Keep it up. Lotsa love Lockerman
Wow, you showed them girl! Good for you! I really need to buy a gun and learn how to use it.
Nice story... My favorite part was when you said, "When I fired a parting shot in the air, their retreat got even faster, which I didn’t think was possible." At least you said good-bye... Ha-ha!
Boy, I bet they were sorry they they tried that! That's what they get for trying to force their way into your home. I'm glad that you and your family were all right. And thank goodness for Ebony! Thanks for sharing your story.
You are so brave! Aren't you lucky that your dad taught you how to use a gun? I lived in a rural part of Kentucky for a few years. The neighbors never accepted me because I was an "outsider" from another state. When my husband worked late on some evenings I always worried that something like what happened to you would happen to me. I'm glad it all turned out ok :)
