The numbers have come in. Unemployment is down. Superficially this is good news for President Obama. But underneath, the White House must be worried.
Pretty much every sector of the economy saw a decline in jobs, but those declines seemingly were offset by a rise in the retail sector. We can speculate that the rise in retail was a result of anticipating the holiday season and therefore temporary jobs.
If those jobs are temporary, we could see a spike in unemployment next time the data is released. More troubling for the President, an additional reason the unemployment number seems to have improved is because of the number of people who have given up looking for a job. Participation in the American job force continues to be low.
The 2012 campaign is going to be won or lost on jobs. If there is real improvement the President will probably get re-elected. If there is not real improvement, the President cannot win unless he convinces the unemployed that they are better off living off the welfare state.
But that will only get him so far.

The Monroe Doctrine On this day in 1823, President James Monroe declared the Monroe Doctrine, stating that the United States would act to protect its interests in the Western Hemisphere. The United States would frequently uphold this doctrine to various degrees in its foreign policy from that time onward. |
