Dear [recipient name was inserted here],

As your constituent and a member of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, I
strongly urge you to include the Abortion Nondiscrimination Act (ANDA), HR
361, in the final version of the Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations bill.

Current law does not provide the necessary or proper protections for the
conscience rights of nurses, doctors, and healthcare workers.

ANDA codifies the Hyde-Weldon Amendment, which has been included in the
Labor/HHS bill since 2005, that ensures that state, local, and federal
governments that receive these funds do not discriminate against health
care entities that refuse to provide, pay for, or perform abortions.

Recently, however, there have been two direct violations that have showed
the importance of including ANDA in the final version of the Labor/HHS
Appropriations bill. The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New
Jersey (UMDNJ) recently forced 12 pro-life nurses to either assist in
performing an abortion or risk terminating their jobs. In a separate case,
the Department of Health and Human Services denied a grant renewal to the
United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Migration and
Refugee Services (MRS) because they refused to provide or refer for
abortions or contraception, despite consistently achieving among the
highest ratings from HHS. Under current law, the only recourse the USCCB
has is to file a complaint with HHS, the very department that denied them
the grant.

The passage of HR 361 in the Labor/HHS Appropriations bill is a top
priority for pro-lifers. I urge you to do all that you can to ensure that
ANDA is included in the final version of the bill. If it is included, I
encourage you to consider voting for the bill in order to pass these
essential protections of conscience rights. Please stand for the
conscience rights of nurses, doctors, and healthcare workers across the
country.

Sincerely,

Jack Hotchkiss
