| | Jack, Happy New Year!
I hope the beautiful Christmas season has refreshed your spirit and energized you for what is already shaping up to be an exciting year in the fight to protect Life. 2012 marks the dark 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade but also holds incredible promise as a pivotal election year. Here’s a look at where we stand right now in the fight to elect authentic pro-life leaders, defund the abortion giant Planned Parenthood and save unborn lives.
Votes Have Consequences, Mission Accomplished
After Obamacare passed, the SBA List set out to ensure that those members of Congress who betrayed the unborn with their vote learned the lesson: votes have consequences.
Rep. Bart Stupak –whose last minute cave-in to President Obama and Speaker Pelosi opened the floodgates of taxpayer funding of abortion – chose to retire immediately rather than face the betrayed and angry pro-life voters of his district. Then in the 2010 midterm elections, the SBA List went on to defeat 15 out of 20 of his fellow turn-coats in the House of Representatives.
We’ve been preparing to do the same thing with Senator Ben Nelson in Nebraska, who was Rep. Stupak’s counterpart in the Senate. Senator Nelson actually drafted the language in the bill which weakened the already minimal pro-life protections and then accepted the infamous “Cornhusker Kickback” in exchange for this vote against Life.
Well, Senator Nelson recently announced that he’s retiring this year. Just like Rep. Stupak, he’d rather retire than face his pro-life constituents at the ballot box in November. Votes Have Consequences, mission accomplished. Fact-Checking Planned Parenthood
Last week—very quietly—America’s abortion giant released its 2009-2010 annual report which revealed that this abortion-centered business has received a sickening half a billion taxpayer dollars in their last fiscal year. For the first time, Planned Parenthood has topped over a billion in total net assets and it is no surprise that abortion continues to be its primary money maker. 91% of Planned Parenthood’s services for pregnant woman are abortion. Your SBA List was out of the gate quickly with analysis of the report. Check out our great coverage in The Washington Times, The Hill, CNS News, and Marjorie's post on Redstate.
During an interview with Bill O’Reilly, Laura Ingraham also outlined Planned Parenthood’s report, saying "the core of its business is abortion." It is an outrage that Planned Parenthood continues to rely on the taxpayer’s dime to increase its bottom line. Fortunately, for the majority of Americans that want OUT of the abortion business, there is good news... Defunding Continues at the State Level
Momentum to defund Planned Parenthood continues to build across the country! In Wisconsin, after defunding Planned Parenthood from the state budget, pro-lifers Gov. Scott Walker and Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch redirected an additional $130,000 in taxpayer funding away from Planned Parenthood. This means that in total, Planned Parenthood has been defunded of over $61.7 million dollars across the country.
With a pending congressional investigation, a wave of former employees willing to testify against them, and consensus among Republican presidential candidates that they should be defunded, Planned Parenthood has never been this vulnerable. Take Action: Contact your Representative and ask them to support Rep. Cliff Stearns' investigation. Our 20th Anniversary
Finally, Jack, I wanted to remind you that our Campaign for Life Gala is now less than a month away. We hope you’ll be able to join us for this special event, which will be keynoted by Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL). This year's Gala will be very special as we will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Susan B. Anthony List.
Can you believe it? Twenty years ago in 1992, the SBA List was created to challenge the myth that women need abortion by electing authentic pro-life women leaders in the image of ladies like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Alice Paul.
With your help, in 20 years, we’ve financed and endorsed over 90 winning members of Congress. Come join us in celebrating the first generation of pro-life women leaders and looking with promise to this next generation of pro-life heroes—leaders who will end abortion in this country. We hope to see you at the Gala on February 1 here in Washington, D.C. Click here for more details and to register to attend. I look forward to working with you this year, Jack. Have a wonderful weekend.
